"Music Notes"
-by Timothy Shaw
At the end of many of his letters, Paul writes encouraging words to saints who are faithfully serving the Lord. Particularly during this month of intentional thanksgiving, my mind is filled with folks who faithfully contribute to our church’s music ministry. While there are many people who deserve thanks, I would like to express gratitude to two people in particular.
Barbara Glenister has served as our church’s pianist for over twenty years, and for this the session recently honored her with the gift of a paid sabbatical leave during 2006. From week to week, Barbara leads the congregation in song as she shares her gifts at the keyboard. As one who knows firsthand, I can tell you that this is a heavy burden! The accompanist must lay aside his or her preference for musical styles and must play in a manner that enables the congregation to lift up its voice well in praise to God. Again, this is no small task, and I am thankful that Barbara desires to serve the Lord and His people in this way.
Ruth Dagg has been involved with church music for many years, and last year she stepped forward to lead the Children’s Choir here at our church. This is a vitally important ministry in two particular areas: our covenant children are taught how to sing, and they are also exposed to the rich repertoire of the church’s song. As Ruth teaches the younger generation how to praise God with their voices, she also contributes to the congregation’s song in an important way. This, too, is no small task, and I am thankful for Ruth’s willingness to serve in this way.
Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to “encourage one another and build one another up.” I hope that you, too, will express your gratitude to these faithful servants of the Lord.
Here is the schedule, so you can plan to save the dates…
December 16 (Sunday): Christmas Choral Celebration. Our own children’s and adult choirs will present choral music that remembers the advent and birth of our Savior. Information about how you can participate will be coming soon!
February 22 (Friday): David Shockey, tenor & Eleanor Shockey, piano. For twenty-five years, David has been chair of vocal activities and director of the chorale at Philadelphia Biblical University in Langhorne, PA. With his wife, Eleanor, he presents stirring, dynamic solo recitals.
May 3 (Saturday): Marji Harding, oboe, & Benjamin Harding, piano. Marji is the instrumental music teacher at The Master’s School in West Simsbury, and she is also a member of the performing trio Ancora. Benjamin is the music associate at Grace Church in West Hartford, and he is also staff accompanist at the Hartt School of Music.
I am looking forward to enjoying these wonderful opportunities, and I hope that you will join me!
