PCC 30th Anniversary
PCC 30th Anniversary - November 2, 2003
On the evening of November 2 the Presbyterian Church of Coventry celebrated their 30th anniversary with a joint Reformation Day worship service with the Presbyterian Church of Manchester, Covenant Presbyterian of Groton, and Christ Community Church (West Hartford). Following a dinner the service began with a prelude from the String Quartet, the (vocal) Quartet then called us to worship. Pastor Cox led us in the Nicene Creed, Pastor Scholten (Manchester) read the scripture lessons, and the sermon was given by Pastor Al Baker, of Christ Community Church.
"His Love Endures Forever"
-by Patsy Evans, in honor of our church’s 30th anniversary
I came to Coventry and our church on Easter Sunday 1980. Most of you were not here then. However, God was here all along. His love endures forever. My family left a 500-member church, a manse and a pipe organ for 80 people, no home and a 12-string guitar. His love endures forever.
With a building that ended at the infant nursery and evening services that fit into our 12 x 17 living room, I did not dream of today’s 250 attendees. His love endures forever.
We came to a church with hundreds of ideas for children’s Christian education. Now, we have a hundred children to fill those classes. His love endures forever.
Out of necessity, our members were generalists. Everyone took a turn cleaning the church. One person would single handedly do diverse ministries in the church. Now, we have whole groups to facilitate each of many tasks. His love endures forever.
When we needed musical leadership the most, God brought it in the form of the Glenisters, an entire family of overabundant musical talent. His love endures forever.
Founders of the church said, "Let’s start an expansion fund for the future." Through sacrifice, the fund was started. The future is here and we have expanded. His love endures forever.
Cycles abound. All newborns are girls; all newborns are boys; all newborns are girls; all newborns are boys. WIC starts. WIC wanes. WIC restarts. WIC wanes. WIC rerestarts. WIC wanes once more. His love endures forever.
The faithful preaching of the Word was always valued here. Brad Evans upholds that tradition for 23 years. His love endures forever.
The Dennehys and Mohrbachers ministered to us and moved away. The Dennehys and Mohrbachers moved back and ministered to us again. His love endures forever.
Men and women who are struggling with chronic pain, job losses, rebellious children, disappointments, besetting sins, have matured in faith and been an example to us all. His love endures forever.
We stand on the shoulders of dedicated Christians like the former pastor’s widow, Emily Gray, who loved the church and worked for its peace and purity. She and others I have known…Jim Cooke, Gertrude Haven, Lynn Hull, Marge Schoppenhorst, BJ Watkins and Ami Chester…are now reaping their eternal reward. His love endures forever.
Changes are everywhere. Yet, we still serve our unchangeable God. He has been faithfully leading this church for my 23 years here plus 7 more. His love endures forever.
