Women In the Church
Report from the PresWIC Luncheon
Seven women from our church attended the annual PresWIC Luncheon in West Springfield on April 12th. It was an encouraging time of fellowship and sharing about what missions programs the churches in our Presbytery are involved in. We were exhorted by Rev. Al Baker of the Christ Community Presbyterian Church in West Hartford to consider missions as a top priority individually and as churches. Here are some highlights from the reports of the various churches:
Christ Community Presbyterian, West Hartford, CT
The church has focused on the children of Uganda, many of whose parents have died of AIDS. They have a sponsorship program to provide necessary funds to send the children to school.
Paula Zitzman is involved in the Widow’s Friend ministry, which helps widows in Bangladesh. They are taught hand embroidery, with the opportunity to sell the items they make, and also receive Bible and literacy training.
Presbyterian Church of Manchester, CT
The church has been involved in a missions trip to Fairmont, West Virginia for several years. One of the leaders of the ministry in West Virginia, Carol Rhoades, had recently died during surgery. This was weighing heavily on several members of the team.
The church also supports Candy Parker’s daughter, Johanna, who ministers in Senegal with children with learning disabilities. They asked for prayer for her future, finances, and God’s direction.
West Springfield Covenant Community Church, West Springfield, MA
The church is calling an Associate Pastor, Rodney Collins.
The church’s daughter church, Springfield Presbyterian Church, may be able to purchase a building in Enfield.
The women from the church volunteer at a local crisis pregnancy center.
They also write letters to persecuted Christians via a web site called prisoneralert.com, a ministry of Voice of the Martyrs.
Last summer, they had 25 youth and adults participate in a missions trip to Jackson, MS.
Covenant Presbyterian Church, Ledyard, CT
The church participates in a pregnancy support center. Their pastor is considering being a counselor for the pregnancy center to help male callers.
The proximity to the naval base and Coast Guard Academy provides plenty of local missions opportunities.
Our PresWIC has a web site! For important dates and contact information, see http://www.snepres.org/snepwic.php. We will be having a fall retreat at Camp CONNRI in Ashford on October 24th-25th. Brochures are available on the table in the Fellowship Hall.
We have volunteered to host next year’s PresWIC Luncheon. More details will be coming, but the date will be in April or May 2009.
